The JWP Big Ol’ Bash

On Saturday 9th July Derby band the James Warner Prophecies held their Big Ol’ Bash at The Old Bell on Sadler Gate to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation.  The band also sold copies of their single ‘Justified’ with 100% of the donations going to the ‘Keeping Derby Safe & Sound’ appeal.

Sales of the single and the proceeds of a bizarre banana auction (yes really!) saw a massive £431 raised on the night.

The Banana Auction!

Everyone at Safe & Sound would like to say a massive thank you to Joe Brown, Andy Pearson, The James Warner Prophecies, and the support acts on the night – Whitemoor and Waking Vegas – for a fantastic evening :)

If you would like to buy ‘Justified’ – for the amount you think it’s worth to protect children from sexual exploitation – a limited number of copies are available from the JWP website at

Marathon fundraising by Derby College students!

Public Services students at Derby College have presented a cheque for £790 to Safe & Sound to support the ‘Keeping Derby Safe & Sound’ appeal, helping children and young people who are being, or who are at risk of being, sexually exploited.

Thirty nine students who are based at Broomfield Hall organised and completed a sponsored 13 mile half marathon and decided to donate the money raised to Safe & Sound after hearing about the charity’s work.

Lecturer Jon Agyeman said: “As part of the course we have visiting speakers from public services and organisations that highlight issues that our students will come across in their future careers in the uniformed and civil public services.

Derby College Tutor Jon Agyeman and student Natasha Gordon present a cheque for £790.40 to Cheryl Stevens, Safe & Sound's Training Coordinator and Steve Boxall, Chair of the Appeal

“Safe & Sound Training Coordinator Cheryl Stevens gave a very moving and informative description of the work that the organisation does and the dangers that young people face in the city and throughout the UK.

“The students were keen to support Safe & Sound’s work with the sponsorship money raised from half marathon and they now have a much greater understanding of the issue of child sexual exploitation which they will take into their working lives.”

Cheryl Stevens added: “We are very grateful to the students for donating this money to Safe & Sound which will go towards our appeal to raise £500,000 to secure the future work of the organisation.

“Our work continues to have a high profile both locally and nationally and an important aspect is raising awareness among young people themselves.”

To donate to the appeal, visit the site www.mycharitypage.com/safeandsoundderby, send a cheque, made payable to Safe and Sound Derby, to PO Box 7077, Derby DE1 0AL, or call 01332 362120.

Funding secured to help Keep Derby Safe & Sound

This month, Safe & Sound has been delighted to learn that it has secured funding to help it to continue its work with children and young people in Derby for the next 3 years.  Both BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief have agreed to support our direct work with children and young people who are being, or at risk of being, sexually exploited.

The funding – totaling £221,900 over 3 years – will enable Safe & Sound Derby to continue and further develop its work with children and young people in the city to enable them to understand the risks they face, and to help them to keep themselves safe.

The charity has been working in Derby for over nine years,  supporting vulnerable children and young people. Following the convictions secured in 2010 as a result of a large scale, long-running child abuse investigation by Derbyshire Police – Operation Retriever – Safe & Sound has seen an increase in demand for its services, leading to a waiting list of 26 young people who need its support.

Safe & Sound is dependent on grants, public support and donations to ensure it can continue to work with some of the Derby’s most at risk children and young people.  In February 2011 the charity launched the ‘Keeping Derby Safe and Sound Appeal’ to enable it to secure its future, grow its services and continue to support those people in need of its help.
